Description

Neighborhood Bike Works is a nonprofit educational organization in Philadelphia that seeks to increase opportunities for urban youth through bicycling, and which promotes cycling as an environmentally-friendly means of transportation.

It started in 1996 as Youth Cycle & Recycle, a program of The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. We organized as a separate non-profit in July 1999, opened the Haddington Neighborhood Shop in 2001, and opened the North Philly/Temple Shop in 2009. Today, we hold classes at three permanent shops, satellite locations in Chester and Norristown, PA, and in several public schools and community centers.           Neighborhood Bike Works Summer Day Camp offers lessons in bike repair and riding safety. Kids also also learn about environmental awareness, general fitness, and nutrition. During camp, students earn a bicycle (with a helmet and lock) that they have reconditioned themselves. Classes involve both hands-on practical skills and written lessons. Campers ride to the Fairmount Water Works and Woodland Sprinkler Park, and visit the Velodrome in the Lehigh Valley and other fun places in and around Philadelphia. Campers also participate in cooking lessons with the Urban Nutrition Initiative, arts and crafts, and games. Two-week camp sessions are held in July and August. Reservations should be made in advance as space is limited to 12 kids per session.

By attending our summer camp, the students will not only have lessons in bike repair and riding safety but will also learn about environmental awareness, general fitness, and nutrition. During our day
