Florida Tech’s men’s tennis team pushed to a 3-0 lead through doubles action and never looked back as the Panthers picked up a 5-0 shutout of Saint Leo Friday in the Sunshine State Conference Championships.
The Panthers had a lock on the advantage after a pair of 8-3 victories at #1 and #3 doubles and then James McLane and Jorge Abarca Montero handled SLU partners Pablo Chavez and Richard Maclachlan, 8-6, in the second flight for the doubles sweep.
Drew Hollis then made easy work of Jeff Hanrahan at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and in the fourth flight, Cory Hodes eliminated Michael Calloway, 6-3, 6-0, to send the Lions packing. All other matches were unfinished after the victory was clinched.
“The men played great doubles and singles today with a lot of enthusiasm,” said head coach Bill Macom. “We will need to create the same atmosphere tomorrow if we want to beat Eckerd and end the season on a strong note.”
