Description

Camp Watonka was founded to provide campers with a 'hands on' science program. Campers choose either one or two sciences which run for a two week period.  The courses, which are designed each year by the teaching staff, are based or practical and fun experimentation and project building. We aim to send campers home with enthusiasm and the knowledge required to take the sciences further as hobbies. Don't forget to check out more pictures of science activities in our photo galleries.

Basics

The day is split into 5 main activity periods. Two in the morning, two in the afternoon and one in the evening. On the first Sunday morning in camp all the campers visit each of the activity areas on camp for a short presentation about the activity by the instructor. On the basis of this, campers sign up for their first selection of sciences and also decide which of the free time activities to try out first.

Sciences

Campers may choose to take either one or two sciences per day for a two week course and these are scheduled into one of the daytime periods. The sciences meet each day (except Sunday) for those two weeks. Campers staying longer than a two week session can then choose another set of sciences.

All the sciences are taught by well qualified staff, many of whom are teachers but all are chosen for their knowledge, enthusiasm and ability to communicate with the campers. Our aim is to send the campers home with new knowledge and skills that could enable them to take the science further as a hobby.

Activities

The periods during the day when the camper is not scheduled for sciences, there is a free choice of activities for each camper to individually choose what to do. Sufficient activities are available each period to ensure that most of the time campers get their first choice but the sign-up process is also organized so that all campers get the opportunity to be first in line. Activities offered each period range across the crafts, rifle, archery and various sports. Many times science buildings that are not being used for classes are also opened in these free activity periods to enable campers not involved in that science to have a brief introduction to the subject and learn to use the equipment.  And of course there is always time to have fun with a counselor.
