In 1963, disabled children had few school options available to them because of limited special education programs. Parents could keep their children at home or they could send him/her to a program that did not meet the needs of their child. Rabbi Max and Blanche Kahn decided to begin a program to serve the needs of these children. From the start, the program was characterized by professionalism, with a focus on the individual needs of each child. Their vision continues to affect the programs that we operate today. Our current programs are non-denominational. We teach our children with respect and sensitivity to their religious and cultural diversity. This diversity exists not only within our student body and their families, but within our staff as well.

What started as a small program in New York City, has now blossomed into 6 locations in the New York region servicing over 1,100 children. Services are provided at the child’s home, day care center, nursery and at our center based locations.

We are licensed by the New York State Education Department and by the New York State Department of Health. We are grant recipients from OMRDD, DSS, DYCS, USHUD and USDE that supplement our existing school programs. Federal grants provide program enrichment such as adaptive computers, adaptive physical education, music and dance therapy, after school programs, and/or funds for the improvement of education. Our sister agency, HASC Center Inc., provides a variety of services including residential homes, day treatment and sheltered workshops for developmentally disabled adults. HASC also provides a Medicaid waiver program, residential habilitation and supported work programs.
