DescriptionThe Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism (MRO) is an organization of associated temples, practice centers and sitting groups in the United States and abroad. The MRO was founded by Zen Master John Daido Loori, Roshi in 1980. It is inspired by the teachings of Zen Master Dogen as presented in his "Mountains and Rivers Sutra." Zen Mountain Monastery functions as the main house of the Order. It is a residential retreat center in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, dedicated to support lay and monastic practitioners. Training in the MRO focuses on the Eight Gates of Zen, a modern manifestation of the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path. Zen Center of New York City, Fire Lotus Temple is the New York City branch of the Monastery, and a model for how a lay center can meet the needs of urban practitioners. The Society of Mountains and Rivers is an international umbrella organization for affiliate meditation groups associated with the Order. Dharma Communications, the educational outreach arm on the Order, presents Zen teachings to the general public and provides publications, audio visual materials and electronic media on Buddhism, zen arts, sciences, moral and ethical teachings, social action, business and ecology. The Zen Environmental Studies Institute is a non profit religious corporation dedicated to providing training, and education in the practice of Zen Buddhism and its relationship to the environment.
