Description

Wagon Road Camp is dedicated to fulfilling the need that all children and youth have to experience wonder and discovery. As children develop and learn more about their world, they are powerfully affected by their experiences. Our goal at Wagon Road is to provide experiences that excite the imagination, broaden abilities, and develop deeper self-understanding.

Each of the programs at Wagon Road Camp is designed with the belief that when children spend time with each other doing fun, interesting, and challenging activities they build close relationships with each other and they see themselves as capable, happy people.

At our 53 acre facility, 35 miles north of New York City we run these programs:

  • Summer Day Camp for children ages 6-13

  • Overnight Respite for Developmentally Delayed Children Ages 7-17

  • Adventure Team Building for Middle and High School Students

  • Project Adventure Workshops for Professionals

  • Overnight for School Groups

In addition, Wagon Road Camp is available as a location for conferences and special events.

Wagon Road Summer Day Camp

The mission of our Summer Day Camp is to provide a quality day camp experience while bringing together a diverse group of children from Westchester County and New York City. Our program is designed with the belief that when children spend time with each other doing fun, interesting, and challenging activities they build close relationships with each other and they see themselves as capable, happy people.

Our program is co-ed for children ages 6 to 13. Youngsters are placed in small groups according to age and gender, and are supervised by qualified counselors. The size of each group allows for full participation and for relationships to form among the campers.

The camp program features horsemanship, adventure ropes course activities, athletics, drama, dance, music, nature study, gardening, cooking, and arts & crafts. Trained and experienced staff supervise these activities. The Swimming program features free swim and swim instruction taught by Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors.

There are also performance days where campers develop performances around specific themes (Bannermania, Hurray for Hollywood, A Summer of Shakespeare). They work with the performance arts specialists to develop routines to perform for their peers. In addition there are special guest performers, an optional overnight, and a carnival that ends the season. As our campers come from different communities in NYC and Westchester, the camp provides a rich multicultural experience.

Staff

Counselors and Specialists are recruited from both NYC and Westchester. They are selected for their childcare, camp experience, special skills, and enthusiasm. They are supervised by experienced professionals who make up the camp’s administration. A full time registered nurse staffs our air-conditioned health center.

Food Service

We provide two snacks and lunch each day for our campers. As part of the Children's Aid Society's effort to encourage good nutrition and healthy eating habits, our menu is designed to increase the use of fresh fruits and vegetables, cut down on fat, and provided a varied menu with old favorites and exciting new meals.

Transportation

Transportation from Manhattan and the Bronx is available by air-conditioned school buses. Pick-up locations are designated Children’s Aid Society Centers in the Upper East Side, Harlem, Washington Heights, and South Bronx. Westchester pick-up locations are designated after registration is complete.

Hours

Day Camp is in session from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, from June 28th to August 20th. To better serve working families, extended hours are offered at some of our centers. In Westchester, extended hours are offered from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During extended hours, campers are supervised by camp staff and engage in recreational activities.
